Have the shorter days and colder temperatures already got you longing for spring’s arrival? Do you find yourself wishing you had the perfect place to gather with friends while you fire up the grill or gather around the firepit?
Whether the inspiration to build a deck is a new idea or something you’ve been contemplating for quite some time, one of your key decisions involves deciding when to pull the trigger on the project.
Of course, at Forsman’s Finest, we work hard to make your home a cozy retreat or a hub for hospitality all year long, but here are some factors to consider when deciding when it’s the best time to build a deck for you.
Winter
The frosty winter months are typically chosen the least frequently for home improvement projects. Contending with the elements while hoping for clear and warmer days is a gamble most would prefer not to undertake. Deck construction is challenging because lingering low temperatures leave the ground hard and frozen, making it difficult to install the support posts. Those same cold temperatures prevent paints and stains from performing correctly as well.
However, if you are patient and want to get a head start on your project before spring, you may find you can take advantage of better pricing on materials and scheduling your installation will be much easier. Additionally, you’ll be ready to enjoy that deck when spring comes back around.
Spring
When the days begin to lengthen and the world explodes into new life and color, there’s no better place to be than outdoors. This is the season when you’ll want to get out and revitalize your outdoor living spaces as your yard emerges from its slumber. Springtime builds are very popular, so our schedule fills quickly and sometimes the demand for materials outpaces supply. This is also the time most folks are enhancing their landscaping, and a construction zone in proximity to newly planted trees and shrubs could damage the beds.
Spring is not without its advantages, however. Longer and warmer days mean more hours on the job, and thawing ground simplifies installation. We don’t have to worry that the stain you’ve chosen won’t adhere to the wood. Because of the popularity of outdoor projects in the spring, many companies roll out their latest and greatest products at this time, giving you the maximum number of options for beauty and durability.
Summer
Ah…summer. The carefree season of sunshine and warmth. This is another busy season for us, and with good reason. When the demands of the school year are less and the pace of life is more relaxed, many turn their attention homeward and tackle those projects that have been hanging over their heads. Budget-wise, this can also be a great time, as the summer is months away from Christmas, beyond tax season, and before back-to-school time.
Summer has a few drawbacks. Because it’s still a busy season, you may be on a waitlist for a while before we can get to your project. Additionally, it may interfere with vacation or give you the hassle of having workers underfoot while you are trying to spend time with your kids on their summer break.
Fall
Just when we’ve had all we can stand of summer’s heat, fall ushers in pleasant weather and mother nature’s most spectacular color palette. The rush of the summer dies down as families return to school and extracurricular activities, and the outdoor living rush begins to slow. We love building a deck in the fall, as the weather is dry and cool, the perfect weather for construction projects.
Typically, our availability to begin new projects is greater in the fall than during the spring and summer, and we’re less likely to upset the beautiful landscaping you’ve maintained all summer. The only potential drawback is that in the short term, you’ll have a limited amount of time to enjoy your deck in pleasant weather.
The Best Time to Build a Deck is YOUR Best Time
Every season comes with its advantages and disadvantages, and we’ve shared ours with you. Ultimately, though, you’ll be able to answer that question better than we can by considering a few key questions:
- What season is less hectic for you?
- Do you have any major events in the immediate future that would make having a deck advantageous or a construction project disadvantageous?
- Have you done your research to know what you want in terms of decking material, project scope, and its design?
- Is this a good time for you financially?
