Why Low-Maintenance Decking Is So Popular

Choosing a composite deck makes sense for a number of reasons including maintenance and durability. Made of plastic film and wood fibers, composite decks are strong and stable, which make them a smart long-term investment.

Composite decks also come in a variety of styles and colors. Not only do they look great and increase the value of your home, but they also save you time and money by staying beautiful as they age.

Low-maintenance decking is:

Frequently Asked Questions

Composite decking, as with any surface in direct sunlight, will get hot. Those who are considering having a composite deck installed should also know that this material gets hotter than traditional wood decking.

A Canadian retailer of decking ran an experiment a few years back and came up with results of an average high temperature of 140 degrees for wood and a range of 160-180 for composites and PVC decking. The composite is a dense material that will hold onto the heat longer once it is out of direct sunlight. The PVC material is less dense and will cool off more rapidly once out of sunlight. Cedar and treated pine are also dense and will retain heat.

Yes, composite decking will scratch. The most common brand we use at Forsman’s Finest is Timber Tech, which has a thin PVC cap on all sides that protects the inner composite material. This PVC layer can be scratched, but the scratches are usually not noticeable and can be easily removed.

Deeper scratches and those that run perpendicular to the grain are more noticeable and will be harder to remove or hide. Dragging metal furniture, animals biting or digging, using a metal tipped snow shovel, or stomping sharp objects into the boards are the most typical reasons for deeper surface scratches. These scratches are mostly cosmetic issues and the boards are not affected structurally.

Power washing, a scrub brush, and some elbow grease will be able to handle nearly all messes created on your deck.

You should never use a metal tipped snow shovel to remove snow as it will scratch the decking.  We recommend a plastic shovel and a leaf blower.

The decking manufacturer has a 30-year fade and stain warranty on their product, but putting a rug in the same place on your deck for a long period of time may result in a different color under the rug area. However, the rug will not damage the material.

You can have your grill on the deck but with any type of food prep, spills should be cleaned promptly to avoid further damage. Hot spills or fires will cause damage to the decking. We do not recommend using a wood burning fire pit on the deck.

This is a possibility on new decks and, in some situations, it will be recommended. However, in the majority of situations, this option will just lead to more work, time, and investment on the part of the homeowner. Adding composite to an existing deck will void all labor warranties we offer because we did not install the original footings. Many times, an original deck is not up to code or the standards that the decking manufacturer and our team uphold and the framing will need to be updated.
